Life Experiences of a Bengali Immigrant
Did you know that Debajyoti Chatterji, one of the co-editors of this web magazine, has recently published his memoir? The book is available on Amazon.com (Click on this link https://amzn.to/3yw2elb for details).
Why did he write his memoir? He is not a celebrity figure, nor can he boast of extraordinary accomplishments. Was this just an ego trip?
He wrote this book because he sincerely believes that every immigrant has many interesting experiences and insights to share with family and friends. Unless these are written down and passed onto future generations, their untold struggles and achievements will die with them.
The author grew up in an impoverished family in a small town in India but received an excellent education. Based on his credentials as an accomplished student, he came to America in 1967 on a scholarship to earn his PhD degree He arrived with only $8 in his pocket. Through a combination of many factors (and a touch of good luck), he rapidly progressed to senior executive positions in R&D management in major industrial companies. He retired early in his 50s, and now devotes his time to community activities, literary pursuits, and travel and other hobbies.
In this memoir, the author has traced the arc of his life from a three-room school in India to the boardroom of a major international company to a happily retired but highly active life. The book is full of numerous interesting stories and valuable insights about the author's life in India and in America. Some are humorous, some are sad, Some describe struggles and some celebrate victories. Each chapter in the book reads like a complete article or essay. The final section presents historical reviews of Indian immigration to the United States over the past 100+ years. The book is sure to engage all readers interested in "immigrant experiences".
